IMRA'S WEEKLY COMMENTARY ON ARUTZ 7 - 11 February, 1999  The McDonald’s Gap

McDonald’s, like most large companies today, has a beautiful Internet website. McDonalds has franchises all over the world. When I printed out the list from their website it took 14 pages. McDonald’s certainly has broad representation – from Albania and Antigua to Uzbekistan, Venezuela, Vietnam and Yugoslavia.

Here is the question: What country is missing on the list? I will give you a hint: it should have been between Indonesia and Italy. That’s right, of all the countries where McDonald’s does business, Israel appears to be the only country not listed on their website.

I wanted to find out why but after waiting a week for a spokesman from McDonald’ worldwide headquarters to get back to me I thought I would share my question with you.

By the way, I also wanted to ask them if it is their standard policy to have their franchisees use their McDonald’s franchises to promote political programs. Peace Now founder Omri Padan, who has the McDonald’s concession in Israel, recently told “Haaretz” (15.1.99) that “I don’t believe in being a pure businessman without taking politics into account. You can’t separate the two.” So you won’t find McDonald’s in the West Bank or the Golan Heights.

As for Jerusalem? “the only exception I would consider making, should it fit with business criteria, is opening a branch in east Jerusalem.”

In Russia and China McDonald’s promotes capitalism. I don’t think this offends most of their American customers. But does promoting Peace Now’s agenda in Israel?
