The McDonalds Gap McDonalds, like most large companies today, has a beautiful Internet website. McDonalds has franchises all over the world. When I printed out the list from their website it took 14 pages. McDonalds certainly has broad representation from Albania and Antigua to Uzbekistan, Venezuela, Vietnam and Yugoslavia. Here is the question: What country is missing on the list? I will give you a hint: it should have been between Indonesia and Italy. Thats right, of all the countries where McDonalds does business, Israel appears to be the only country not listed on their website. I wanted to find out why but after waiting a week for a spokesman from McDonald worldwide headquarters to get back to me I thought I would share my question with you. By the way, I also wanted to ask them if it is their standard policy to have their franchisees use their McDonalds franchises to promote political programs. Peace Now founder Omri Padan, who has the McDonalds concession in Israel, recently told Haaretz (15.1.99) that I dont believe in being a pure businessman without taking politics into account. You cant separate the two. So you wont find McDonalds in the West Bank or the Golan Heights. As for Jerusalem? the only exception I would consider making, should it fit with business criteria, is opening a branch in east Jerusalem. In Russia and China McDonalds promotes capitalism. I dont think this offends most of their American customers. But does promoting Peace Nows agenda in Israel?
