The UN's Condemnation of Israel's Building in Har Homa

Letter to South African Newspapers

Dear Editor
On JULY 16,1997 the UN General Assembly overwhelmingly passed a resolution
condemning Israel's refusal to stop work on a controversial building project
on disputed land in Jerusalem. Meeting in "emergency special session", the
assembly adopted the resolution by a 131-3 vote after the Arab and Muslim
sponsoring states agreed to remove a clause urging governments and private
companies to stop providing support for the construction work. Voting against
the resolution were Israel, the US and the Pacific island federation of
Micronesia. My question is, what was South Africa's stand on the matter?
I ask this in view of the spiritual principle underlying the promise to Abraham,
Isaac and Jacob (Israel), "I will bless those who bless you, and whoever
curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through
you". Fortunately, the colonialist influence of Great Britain in South
Africa caused us to oppose Germany and their perpetration of the Jewish Holocaust
in the Second World War. And then Dr D.F. Malan was one of the first statesmen
to recognize the rebirth of the State of Israel in 1948. Subsequently, until
the emergence of new alliances of our present government, excellent cooperation
existed with Israel.
These changes in alliances of our government to Islamic regimes coincide
with the daily increasing explosiveness of the situation in Israel in which
incidences there can lead to militant Islamic reactions in our already violence
riddled country. Proof of this was seen with the petrol bomb attack recently
on the home of a Jewish family in Cape Town. It represented extreme
anti-Semitism, something I suspect we are going to see a lot more of in South
